Title:
Repayment
Reference ID:
12TK
Department Responsible:
HM Revenue & Customs
Problem Description:
repayments from the HMRC for PAYE or orther taxation are taking longer. Although we now file on-line (as requested by HMRC), we still have to telephone and then write for the repayment. This surely begs the question, why do we file on-line in the first place?
Proposed solution:
allow repayment matters to be handled on-line in the same manner as filing. The objective should be to secure a significantly faster delivery of repayments. In the current recession, this could make all the difference for many SMEs.
Cost or time incurred:
£1000

PAYE repayments to employers cannot be claimed on the on-line Employer Annual Return. Each claim has to be checked to ensure all the necessary return parts have been received, that no arithmetical errors have been made and that all payments have been accounted for on the returns. Due to the complexity of the PAYE reconciliation process it is not possible to make early repayments. But we have recently introduced a process change to obviate the need for claims made on the phone to be confirmed in writing.
The Department is also actively seeking to provide more online services, to support those customers who file online. Providing services cost effectively, whilst recognising the need for robust data security and customer authentication are critical issues for HMRC.
